I began my teaching journey in a classroom where many of my students were facing "adult-sized" challenges. I quickly realized that the traditional approach to education would not help my students succeed. I knew I needed to do three things: build strong relationships, create engaging lessons, and find ways to make students feel successful. For my students to feel important and excited about learning, I needed to be confident about how and what I was teaching; textbook lessons and standard worksheets did not accomplish this goal. It was during this time period that I created my first lessons and materials. I watched faces light up and students escape, if only for a moment, from their struggles at home. Since then, I've never looked back!
